Nordic Klezmorim

Performing on Erev Yom Kippur is something unheard of for a klezmer band. That’s most probably the only reason why ESOD did not let Doina Klezmer to perform at their premises, and the concert had to be moved to The Place – a nice place indeed.

Unlike many local klezmer bands, the Finns performance was very skilled technically, but somewhat lacked the joy one usually associates with the style. Maybe that’s characteristic of the cold country they live in? Komatcha Klezmer were much wilder.

I’d say get something stronger than beer to drink.

Night on Earth

Night on Earth (1991)

Once again, I’ve been rather slow to catch up with a film. So slow, in fact, that it took me by surprise that they still used the pre-euro currencies in the European episodes.

I don’t like Roberto Benigni, but even that hadn’t stopped me from liking the episode with him as a whole. Wynona Rider is less then credible, but the rest of the cast are very OK, and all the five stories told are worth hearing. A very nice thing about the film is that at least three out of five parts manage to convey the spirit of the place quite, even surprisingly, well. One wonders if the other two are as realistic, and if yes, maybe a trip to SF is in order.

Since obviously there aren’t any theatres playing this film, renting one for a night, or even a week, is a good thing to do. Enjoy your relaxed evening while taking 5 trips, at least several of them abroad, without ever having to get up from the couch.

O’Briens

Я долго боялся писать про O’Briens, потому что почти сразу после первого моего туда визита мне на глаза попалось завлекалово от кого-то из тамошнего персонала, рекламировавшее стриптиз и прочие радости, для паба совершенно неуместные.

С тех пор я зашёл туда ещё раз; это был вечер пятницы, но для нас пятерых нашлось место (и вообще, народу было довольно мало), а лишнего ничего не происходило.

Для Гражданки, не очень богатой (хотя и постепенно исправляющейся в этом плане) на питейные заведения, О’Брайенс, когда в нём пусто, просто замечателен. Место за стойкой найдут, похоже, почти всегда, независимо от общей занятости заведения.

Еда пристойная, приносят за разумное время. Диапазон напитков широк. На удивление много разных висок, как шотландских, так и ирландских. Сидр, как и везде, похоже, по городу, то есть, то нет.

Расстраивает то, что там всё никак не научатся принимать карточки. Ну и то, что в названии нет второго апострофа.
