Лампа Ladino замечательно называется, и задумка отличная, но исполнение невыносимо скучное. Бывают интересные заунывные вещи, но этот случай явно не тот. Впечатление, правда, сложено по тому, что выложено у них на сайте, и, возможно, живьём они значительно лучше, но тогда веб-мастера или идеолога надо, скажем, пороть.
Одна надежда на Клезфест.
It took some Googling for what on Oerth happened to The Last Unicorn live action film that even made it to IMDB some time ago and then disappeared mysteriously (they even had the same people that did the voices to play the characters!) to find out that the guys who did animation for this one (there were much more than one Japanese name in the closing titles, and that explained, at that moment, why Lady Amalthea was so ‘animatic’) later became Studio Ghibli. That explains a lot.
The budget wasn’t too high (and it shows), but just like for Soul Music and Wyrd Sisters (low-budget and based on a book), the base is good enough to shine with just very decent effort. Separate efforts were certainly payed to remain true to the book, and that’s something we should all be thankful for.
All in all, see the film, read the book (in any order) and enjoy the fairytale for kids and grown-ups alike.
It might be a good idea to purchase a 25th anniversary widescreen edition. The quality of the picture has improved a lot, and I’m pretty sure you’ll be wanting to see it again and again (not to mention the personal autograph by Peter S. Beagle himself).
На выходных угораздило меня посетить третий из Красных теремов Санкт-Петербурга. К сожалению, ему не удалось изменить моё мнение об этой сети, а скорее наоборот, удалось его усилить. Заведения эти при всей китайскости на вид умудряются быть совершенно некитайскими по ощущениям. Пресная кухня, небольшие порции и заоблачные по китайским меркам цены делают их совершенно неконкурентоспособными ни по каким признакам, кроме пространственно-временных (так, например, в полдвенадцатого ночи в пятницу в Гранд-Каньоне можно выбирать между тихим Теремом и Мюнхеллем с толпой и музыкой внутри. Та ещё дилемма).
Пожалуйста, если вам хочется китайской еды, ходите в Харбины, они на порядок, или даже на два, лучше.
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (2007)
This rather long (3 hours, but we are accustomed to this after the Lords of the Rings, no?) conclusion (at least, unlike the 2nd part that blatantly says there will be part 3 soon) to the Pirates of the Carribean saga is certainly worth seeing. As with other sequels, it is best viewed after all the information from the previous two installments are well processed, but can probably be enjoyed standalone as well.
Sometimes the action is so fast you don’t quite get what hit whom (and it can be quite important), but usually the sequence slows down at all the nice moments.
I’m not sure if I can say that the plot is not too artificial at certain places. I also am all for removing the boring motivational speeches. The movie goes down in one go despite these issues.
Lots of fun stuff, both for kids and their parents, will certainly be enjoyed by everyone.
Another nice thing that I’ll mention is that they’ve managed to keep all (or most?) of the 1st-part characters till the end. It certainly took some skill, although at certain points it seemed like the Black Pearl is carrying a full cargo bay of ‘disposable pirates’, while the main crew remains intact throughout all the massacres.
All in all, it’s really good, and a theatre environment will certainly add to the pleasure.
A Campari postcard to help against proverbial indigestion suggests that “Ei tippa tapa”, very appropriately meaning “One drop doesn’t kill”.
С пивными в окрестностях Penn station и с ирландскими пивными в частности проблем нет совсем (на удивление), выбор пал на попавшийся под руку первым Tir na nOg (как выяснилось впоследствии, часть сети. Если в остальных местах так же хорошо, как и в этом, то очень рекомендую. Надо только сначала проверить).
Снаружи выглядящий несколько чопорно и пусто, изнутри Тир на нОг весьма приятен. Бодрые официант(ки) не повторяют мгновенно уже набившую оскомины тягомотину про Good evening, my name is… and I will be your server tonight (и вообще, за слово server вместо waiter надо убивайт), и быстро выполняют заказы. Правда, за свои традиционные по местным меркам 15 процентов чаевых они могли бы чуть чаще появляться у столика.
Пивов разных разливных 21 штука, довольно много импортного лагера, но есть и эли (в частности, Ньюкасл), красное (Киллиан), и стауты (помимо, разумеется, Гиннесса, есть ещё и фирменный вроде как сваренный в Нью-Йорке же на удивление приличный стаут, одноимённый с заведениями).
Пинта идёт за $6, полпинты за полцены. Горячие закуски к пиву, доставляемые неслабыми порциями (тут российским пивным ещё расти и расти) обходятся в $8-$12. Собственно горячие блюда – от $15 и выше.
В понедельник вечером места было довольно много, музыка очень фоновая, в телевизоре футбол без звука (судя по всему, в него играли прямо таки в то же самое время в Мэдисон Сквер Гарден через дорогу, которую со всех сторон обложила по не совсем понятным причинам полиция с мигалками).
Хороший выбор, особенно если идти никуда не надо.

I won’t say it’s the best Shrek ever (or so far, which is currently the same), but it certainly is good. I think it’s maybe even better than Shrek-2. No, those kitty eyes won’t make me think otherwise, and the dragonkeys are really cute and numerous to off-set the deficiency of said sad eyes.
The dynamic plot that mocks the teenager subculture was something right on the spot for a Sunday night fever out. The female Sonderteam adds to the enjoyment. The only problem there was my inability to figure out who was on it beside Cinderella, Snowwhite, Rapunzel, Sleepy Beauty, and, of course, Fiona. That unknown Dame wore a dark-magenta dress, and her hair was short, dark, and curly. Maybe you’ll be more lucky?
Unlike Harry Potter, Shrek characters grow a bit too fast and overtake their audience at certain points. The result is still plenty of fun. It’s everywhere now, go see it!
From a wonderful self-referring motivation postcard from Finland that adds to the collection of various sayings in different languages, we find it that “Usko itseesi, vuoret sürtyvät”, and it means “When you trust yourself, you can move the mountains”.
From the city of Tampere we now receive two Estonian bits of folk lore. “Julge hundi rind on rasvane”, meaning “A brave wolf gets the butter”, and “Töö kiidab tegijat”, standing for “The work thanks the one who does it”. Where can I find such job, anybody?
